How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed SensorIn this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the most effective method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know both the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could replacement audi car key lead to an engine shut down.
A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in the gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. 5. Tachometer
